This recipe for Easy Baked Glazed Chocolate Donuts makes a healthier treat. Baked not fried, these cake doughnuts are generously glazed.
A Chocolate Glazed Donuts Recipe Baked at Home
These Easy Baked Glazed Chocolate Doughnuts are a sweet, family-friendly homemade treat that will be gobbled up in seconds by children and adults alike.
They are soft, flavorful and so much better than other baked doughnuts I’ve tried. Most have been doughnut-shaped cakes, but these really do taste like doughnuts – delicious, you can’t eat just one doughnut!
Why This Recipe Works
- Using good quality cocoa powder gives a deeper chocolate richness.
- Replacing the oil you find in most donut recipes with melted butter gives a much more flavorful result.
- Double Glazing gives an extra thick coating of glaze.
Baked Donuts Anyone Can Make
Making baked doughnuts is so simple! All you need is one bowl, one wooden spoon, and a donut pan! The hardest part is melting the butter that I used instead of all oil, but it’s well worth it because it adds a lot of flavors.
How to Make Easy Baked Glazed Chocolate Donuts
To make these Baked Glazed Chocolate Doughnuts, generously grease the pan and fill the doughnut sections 3/4 of the way to allow them to rise, but not so much they are difficult to get out of the pan.
Once baked, they should be dipped in the glaze while still warm. I did mine one at a time and then went back to the first and did a second coat.
Cool completely on a wire rack to allow the glaze to set.
once the glaze is set, serve and enjoy!
This the pan I have. You can get a pan like mine, here on Amazon . (#paidlink). I highly recommend the two-pack.
This recipe makes 18 doughnuts so if you don’t have two, it will take quite a while to get through the batter.

Let’s Make Easy Baked Glazed Chocolate Donuts
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ¾ cups granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large egg lightly beaten
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons butter melted
- 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
For the double glaze: (Note: if you plan to do just one layer, half the recipe)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
- 10 to 12 tablespoons milk
- ¼ teaspoon salt optional
Instructions
For the Donuts
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease 3 (6 section) doughnut pans well.
- Into a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, vegetable oil, and vanilla.
- Stir the wet mixture into the dry ingredients until just combined. If the mixture looks dry or gummy, add more milk until it loosens into a batter.
- Spoon the batter into the baking pans, filling each one a little more than three-quarters full.
- Bake for 17 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then tap the doughnuts out onto a sheet pan.
For the Glaze
- Combine all the ingredients in a medium bowl and mix until smooth.
- Place baking paper under wire racks to catch the excess glaze.
- As each batch is finished baking, coat the hot donuts in glaze on both sides by dunking each side quickly. Set them on a wire rack to let the excess drip off onto the baking paper underneath.
- Once you reach the end, re-dip for a second time.

Do you use Dutch or Natural cocoa? I’m guessing Dutch since not baking soda but just curious what you use since you said this came out close to a real donut (which is what I want) as opposed to a donut shaped cake! Thanks!
Erren Hart says
Hi, I use dutch.
Darla says
How does 4 cups of confectioners sugar with only 2-3 tablespoons hot water and 3 teaspoons vanilla make a glaze?? There is not enough liquid there for 4 cups of sugar to turn into a glaze. Misprint?
Erren Hart says
Hi Darla, It’s hot water which makes a lot runnier than it was cold. This recipe has been made many times and I have yet to have a complaint about the glaze. If by chance it turns out thick, just add more water.
Amanda Maricle says
I had the same problem. I had to double or triple the amount of hot water put in to get the glaze to be runny.
Michelle says
I have made these donuts before and am making them again for a get together. Top notch. Recipe is on point
Erren's Kitchen says
That is so awesome to hear Michelle, thank you!
Elaine says
Nope, recipe was a big miss! There is equal amounts liquid to dry ingredients which results in a paste substance not a batter. If you have 2 cups of flour and only 1 1/4 milk how is your batter runny?
Erren's Kitchen says
I don’t know what went wrong as unfortunately, I wasn’t with you when you made it, but so far this has been a successful recipe for sme time now, I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you!
Rylee says
I’m not seeing the directions for how to make the glaze…am I just not seeing it?
Erren's Kitchen says
It is definitely there, near the bottom! Let me know if you have any other troubles!
Brenda Lippe says
I’m going to try these tomorrow and I’ll let you know how they came out. I do have one question though, isn’t the glaze supposed to be chocolate? Your recipe for the glaze doesn’t include chocolate so I’m going to put some cocoa powder in with the powdered sugar and see if that is good. Tyvm for this recipe because I was looking for a good one to use my silicone donut pan.
Erren's Kitchen says
Yes add some it should work out good, touch base and let me know!
Liz says
I used silicone trays from Amazon, and I was able to get 24 donuts from this recipe.
Erren's Kitchen says
They are good from Amazon, aren’t they Liz!
Amy says
Great donuts. Not usually a cake donut fan but I really love these. Like the consistency of the donut and flavor. They aren’t overly chocolate which gives a good balance. Icing was a little sweet for me, but my sister loved it!
Erren says
So glad you and your sister enjoyed them, Amy!
Kitty H says
Way, way to sweet. I paused at 3 tablespoons of vanilla for the icing but did it any way….bug mistake. Would have been much better made with lemon juice.
These are more of a vanilla doughnut as well. Not nearly enough chocolate
They did rise beautifully and the texture was that of a cake doughnut. Would.make the basic recipient again but tweak it significantly.
Erren says
Hi Kitty, I’m sorry you weren’t happy with the recipe. I need to point put one thing though. The recipe calls for 3 teaspoons of vanilla not tablespoons. If you did, in fact, use 3 tablespoons, it would definitely affect the outcome.
ed says
the only thing about these that resembles donuts is the shape; the taste, color, and consistency are all just muffins. very disappointing.
