There’s nothing like a warm, freshly-baked cherry crumble. The sweet, tart cherries and the crunchy topping create a truly delicious dessert.
The best thing about cherry crumble is that it’s so easy to make! You don’t need to be a master baker to whip up a batch of this scrumptious dessert. Just follow this simple recipe, and you’ll be enjoying cherry crumble in no time.
Why This Recipe Works
- A combination of white sugar and brown sugar in the topping gives a delicious caramel-like flavor while keeping it from being too heavy or sweet.
- Fresh or frozen cherries instead of jarred or canned ensure that your crumble will be packed with natural flavor.
- Using jam makes the filling effortless without the need for thickeners.
- A touch of cinnamon gives the cherry crumble a lovely spiced flavor that takes it to the next level.
Many fruit desserts take hours to make and require complicated steps. This easy recipe is effortless to prepare and only requires a few simple ingredients. Serve with Vanilla Ice Cream or homemade whipped cream for a dessert that everyone will devour.
Ingredient Notes
- Cherries: You can use any fresh cherry in this recipe. We prefer dark sweet cherries, but you can use whatever type you like. Just make sure that they are nice and ripe for the best flavor. You can also use frozen cherries if fresh are not in season. Just be sure to thaw and drain the juices well.
- Cherry Jam: We like to use our homemade cherry jam in this recipe, but you can also use store-bought. Just make sure that it is a good quality jam.
- Brown Sugar: This recipe uses light brown or dark brown sugar. We prefer dark brown sugar because it has a richer flavor.
- White sugar: This recipe can use granulated white sugar or superfine sugar.
- Oats: We use old-fashioned rolled oats in this recipe, but you can also use quick oats. Either will work just fine. You can replace the oats with flour if you like your crumble without oats.
Step By Step Instructions
In a large mixing bowl, mix 2 lbs of cherries with 1½ cups of jam.
Pour the cherry filling into a 9? pie plate.
Add 1 cup all-purpose flour, ¾ cup rolled oats, ½ cup granulated sugar, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon to a large mixing bowl.
Stir together and add 8 tablespoons of melted butter.
Stir until the butter is combined with the dry ingredients.
Crumble it over the cherry filling in the pie plate.
Bake at 350°F/180°C for 35 – 40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
Allow to cool and serve warm.
Cherry crumble is delicious but also tasty with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
Storage and Freezing Instructions
Storing Leftovers: After the cherry crumble has completely cooled, cover it with a lid, foil, or plastic wrap. It can be kept at room temperature for 1 or 2 days after it is baked.
For Longer Storage: Your crumble can be kept covered in the refrigerator for up to four days. Be aware that the crumble topping will not stay as crisp after refrigerating.
To Freeze: Cherry crumble can be frozen for up to 3 months. Just place it in an airtight, freezer-safe container and store it in the freezer. When ready to enjoy, thaw it overnight in the fridge and reheat it in a 350°F/180°C oven until warm.
Individual servings can be reheated in the microwave for about a minute or until warm.
Erren’s Top Tips & Variations
- For the best flavor, use ripe cherries that are fresh or frozen.
- When buying cherries, look for ones that are plump and have a deep red color. Avoid cherries that are dull in color or have any green patches. Also, give them a gentle squeeze to ensure they’re not too soft.
- Use dark brown sugar to get a nice caramel flavor in the topping.
- You can replace the oats with flour if you like your crumble without oats.
- All ovens bake at different rates, so your cherry crumble may take a bit less time or a little longer to bake.
