- Adding garlic and herbs to the butter adds indulgence to the sandwich.
- Using a mixture of cheeses adds complexity to the flavors.
What Bread For Gourmet Grilled Cheese
When you’re making a gooey, cheese-filled hot sandwich, a sturdier bread works best. Breads like sourdough or pumpernickel are great for bringing lots of flavor or for a more traditional taste, crusty Pullman, and Italian bread work too!
What cheese for grilled cheese
For grilled cheese, the most important thing you need is a cheese that melts easily to get that gooey center everyone craves.
Cheeses like cheddar, mozzarella, Provolone, Colby, Gouda, and Monterey Jack are all great options.
How To Make Grilled Cheese
- Preheat your pan over medium-low heat.
- Butter one side of the bread and place it in the pan butter side down.
- Add the cheese and cover with a second piece of buttered bread (butter side up).
- Cook until golden and the cheese is melted.
Erren’s Top Tips
- Start with the heat at medium-low and adjust it as you cook, to ensure that the bread toasts at the same rate that the cheese melts.
- Spread the butter to the edge of the bread to ensure every bite is as good as it could be!
- Don’t move the sandwich too much during cooking. The key to getting it golden brown is keeping it still in the pan.
